Schlumberger - Faculty for the Future

Founded in 1927, Schlumberger is now one of the leading oilfield services providers in the world. Operating in around 80 countries, and employing over 80,000 people, Schlumberger recorded operating revenue in excess of $23 Billion (for FY07). The Faculty for the Future portal has been designed to provide a community of female professionals from 25 countries (generally in emerging economies) a means to communicate effectively online via a simple yet powerful user-driven web portal, with many functions familiar to users of the various popular social networking sites. The site uses the Plone content management system to provide its core functionality whilst Netsight developed a number of custom extensions to create the full suite of features requested by the client.

Operating in around 80 countries, and employing over 80,000 people, Schlumberger recorded operating revenue in excess of $23 Billion (for FY07). In addition to their current oilfield services, Schlumberger invests heavily in R&D to create differentiating technologies.

Netsight have completed a number of web-based projects for different Schlumberger business units, including the two community sites Heavy Oil Portal and Faculty for the Future. Our small project teams and agile development methodology has enabled Schlumberger to complete these projects quickly and efficiently.

Faculty for the Future

The Faculty for the Future portal has been designed to provide a community of female professionals from 25 countries (generally in emerging economies) a means to communicate effectively online via a simple yet powerful user-driven web portal, with many functions familiar to users of the various popular social networking sites. The site uses the Plone content management system to provide its core functionality whilst Netsight developed a number of custom extensions to create the full suite of features requested by the client.

  • Once logged in, members of the FFTF community can use the AJAX-based user interface to easily update a variety of information about themselves and their research in a personal profile that other members can view.
  • A forum provides the members with an area for effective online communication - different threads (or topics) can be created by any user to discuss any subject as appropriate.
  • An internal mail system ensures that communication between members is secure, without a member having to release their email address to the rest of the community. A "who's online" module lists current members using the portal for quick and easy communication.
  • A members' area, only accessible to registered users, allows hassle-free searching of other users by their location, field of expertise, name, university and other similar information.

Heavy Oil Portal

HeavyOilinfo.com is a forum for discussion and analysis of the key issues affecting the heavy oil industry. Netsight were commissioned to produce a Plone-based portal for Schlumberger to empower members of the oil industry to communicate and share information.

  • User-centric integration with Invision PowerBoard provides a user-friendly mechanism for discussing a wide variety of topics relating to the heavy oil industry.
  • The Heavy Oil blog enables site administrators to share live updates in the industry with other members of the portal. A supporting RSS feed allows users to read recent entries in their preferred software.
  • An integrated spell-checker allows content contributors to check their text before publishing it to members of the public. The workflow allows contributors to create content in a draft state and proof it with colleagues before releasing it to the public.
  • The portal, based on Plone, has been designed to be highly accessible (and usable), working in accordance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.
