The Logistics Operational Guide (LOG) for all humanitarian logisticians

Reflab with the Logistic Cluster and WFP, has developed the Logistics Operational Guide (LOG) with the aim to be a single source of information on humanitarian supply chain best practices and easy access to simple tools and templates.

The Logistics Cluster  http://www.logcluster.org, is an interagency organization dealing with logistics information sharing & coordination in the context of international operations.

The content of the Logistics Operational Guide (LOG), is based on information from manuals from over 28 humanitarian organizations, academia and the private sector. Over 40 representatives from 14 different organizations were involved. The LOG is intended to be of use for all humanitarian logisticians, regardless of the size of their organization or its area of specialization. It's an operational manual, to be used worldwide where interenet connectivity is a challenge. In addition to providing operational tools, templates and guidelines, it hosts information on the application of the different supply chain aspects in the humanitarian operational environment. The LOG aims at providing cross-cutting information, standardized definitions, guidelines, operational tools and templates.

Designed for the fields

The LOG uses simple technology to make the manual available both online and offline.  The user can download the LOG onto a computer, USB or other device and at which point all information can be searched and browsed in the same manner offline or online. Moreover the system updates the contents whenever an Internet connection is available, and only the revised parts are downloaded. Navigation, search, glossary and automatic table of contents are all available online and offline.

LOG is based on Reflab product Online Offline Publication System that uses HTML and Gears technology. See also the case: Online offline project designed for field usage

Dynamic and collaborative

Not only this solution has removed the need to burn and distribute CDs with the manual but has allowed fast and collaborative editing. The backoffice is developed in Plone and provides management of annexes, diagrams and images, metadata, workflow and versioning of the contents. Thus many editors can collaborate at the same time updating the manual, keeping track of the changes and then pushing the updates to online and offline versions.
