It is widely acknowledged (see the EU funded FLOSS Metrics report, Nov. 2006) that Open Source Software (OSS) has a huge potential for improving the competitiveness of European industry.

European companies are increasingly aware of the theoretical benefits of OSS such as lowering overall costs and raising innovation levels. However practical use of OSS is still hindered by the misconception that the OSS development pays too little attention to quality, security and dependability assurance. Some FP7 Resaerch projects such as Qualipso and Flossmetrics, but also others like QUALOSS, SQO-OSS, ETICS, have fostered a "great leap forward" in terms of OSS quality, creating the conditions for large scale OSS adoption. These projects have paved the way to a new wave of research aimed at inserting OSS in the critical path of mission critical business applications, enterprises ICT architectures and even safety critical software tools in health care, telecommunication and the automotive section.
